check the image quality setting, by default it is at 100%. you might want to put it to 80% or maybe even less. though I personally don't think the gd library does very good at jpeg compressions much lower than 80%, but around 80 only a super finicky graphic artist with a magnifying glass looking at the screen is likely to notice anything on most images.
I think you have to regenerate the already made images though in order to get the file sizes to change.
