Unable to load function 'gdFree'

I'm getting this error "Unable to load function 'gdFree'" when trying to add Alternate Images.

The engine may not be configured for image processing, or the version of GD on the server is not new enough.

I get the same error, even though I have the latest version of Empresa (5.17, Windows Server 2003 ), the dll's registered as system libraries / GD and the bdg.dll installed (actually I tried even two different ones - the one that was posted here and a second one, significantly bigger (2.9 MB) that I found somewhere in a forum.

Any clues what can cause this errors? Do I miss anything in the installation?

Has there been any solution to this? I just created a VM with Ubuntu 18 and Empresa 5.33 and I'm getting this error too.

I'd recommend starting a new thread on this in the Miva Empresa area:

I don't believe anyone is monitoring the Merchant 5.5 sub-forum at this point given that version is from more than a decade ago. You'll want to run diagtool and ensure it shows GD support, also report the OS GD version or the version you're pointing Empresa at, i386 vs x64, and ideally Empresa config.
