    Serial / Lot number

We are looking to capture product details such as serial / lot numbers on products when we ship them, any suggestions for the best way to do so?

    Thanks!

    Re: Serial / Lot number

How would you like this data to be recorded? Would it be adequate to enter these serial numbers manually within your admin on the order itself while processing/preparing shipping?

If so, you can create a Custom Order Field (if you're on Production Release 8 Update 9 or later), by going to Utilities, checking the box next to Custom Fields and clicking Update, and then going to the Custom Fields tab, selecting New Field in the upper right corner, and using the dropdowns and fields in there to create an Order Field with a code something like serialNumber and a name of Serial / Lot Number. You could then enter a comma delimited list of numbers for the product(s) on that order.

Batch reports and email templates could be modified to include the value in that field as well, if desired.

If that wouldn't suit your needs, please provide more info on what you're looking for.

This is a great idea however, most orders have multi lines/pieces. I would like to input SN/LN per piece/line.

If you need the number to be tied to each individual product in the order and can't use a delimited name/value pair list in a single Custom Field, then the only other built-in option I can think to recommend would be to edit each individual product on the order itself (via Manage Orders) and add an "Attribute" with a price of 0.00, which you can give a code of "Serial or Lot #" and then enter the number for the attribute's name, click Add Attribute and then Save.

Is that an adequate solution? Note that this may not always have an intuitive appearance on printed reports or emails, as the Attribute field wasn't originally intended for order notes - but any odd behavior could be corrected with template edits.
