Right, BUT ... I don't have Miva MERCHANT on my local pc. So what is there to upgrade? Based on everything said here so far, the only software I will have on my local pc is Miva Mia. I'm new to this and have never been through an upgrade before. Thanks for your patience.

Okay, I think you need to take a step back and check out the Miva Mia docs so you understand what it does, how it works and all the steps involved in getting a copy of your store to run locally on your PC. You seem to be missing the step where you copy your existing store and run it locally on your PC through Miva Mia. Until you do that you can't run it locally, use it for development, or to upgrade it to v5.5.

Unfortunately, there's no Miva Mia for OS X so that's not the best option, but....... If you can set up mySQL on OS X, you can run Mia through VMware + Windows and simply connect to mySQL that way - using your Mac's IP address or hostname.

        @ Rick Wilson:

Rick, for sometime now I've noticed a (growing) community of mac users, who also develop with Miva Merchant - what are the chances that Miva Merchant will someday create a mac version of Miva Mia? Yes - I know that there are programs (VM Fusion and Parallels) that emulate the Windows environment on macs - but as Remik mentioned, Mac OS X, by default, allows for much easier MySQL integration which I'm sure alot of developers (including myself) would greatly benefit from...

Just an idea - but I just wanted to throw it out there...

        Thanks,

          Tim,

Considering many of us internally also use Mac's, I would say very high. But I can't come close to predicting when.

You know, it may actually be EASIER and better if the whole Miva Mia concept went away, and was replaced by a version of Miva Empresa you can run on OS X or Windows. You can install the LAMP or WAMP stacks on both operating systems - there are several pre-packaged versions very easy to install - so as long as one was to run Apache + mySQL + Empresa, that's all they'd need to test Miva Merchant off-line, in an environment much more closely resembling their live web servers. Especially the Apache part, which would allow one to test all those .htaccess rewrites - which you just can't do with Miva Mia...

Re: How to set up a test environment on my local pc?

UPDATE: I meant to say "desktop Windows" when it comes to a new version of Empresa... I do know there is Empresa available for Windows Server - not sure how easy it would be to port that to Windows XP (or Vista), though, neither of which have the same IIS implementation as the Server platform has.

This is where sticking to Apache may prove a little more universal.

And of course, Mac OS X desktop or server is similar enough that an OS X version of Empresa should run the same way on the desktop for local testing, or allow us, hosting companies, run Miva Merchant on Apple XServe hardware. We have a number of them and these systems totally kick butt - awesome performance and management tools, and, get this, less expensive than comparably configured Dell servers. :-)

                dotcomhost,

So I should assume it is not possible to install 3.97 or vm on OS X server in current builds of the FreeBSD versions?

If this is the case, I will stop trying to get it to work on our OS X server.

Good question - we have a few XServes here but I've never tried setting up any versions of Empresa on OS X. Personally I don't think that's going to work - they'd need to recompile it specifically for OS X. Just because OS X is a distant relative of BSD doesn't automatically mean it will run FreeBSD binaries.

Thanks as I what I thought from what I was finding from me trying to get it to work. Will keep my fingers crossed they will work on a version as it should not take much.
