Emptying unbought items from shopping carts

We have customers who put items in shopping baskets but don't buy them. Because some of our items are one of a kind, we'll get an out of inventory message for these items. After a day or so, I;ll delete the expired shopping baskets so that the inventory is put back in stock. We've been having an issue where items which are out of inventory, have been showing as inventory. This has become an issue because since the item has been sold, we no longer have it, but it shows again as available on our website. I'm not sure if the shopping basket deletion is causing this. Has anyone had this issue or can any one help me understand why this is happening. Also, what would be the impact if instead of deleting the shopping baskets, I were add the inventory back in.

    Thanks.

It is important that you do not manually adjust the inventory when you see an item is out of stock on the page but you know it is still on the shelf. You must use the delete expired baskets routine as that correctly restocks the inventory in merchant.

Thanks. I didn't think it was a good idea, so I haven't been doing that. Do you know why we might be having the issue of items showing up as inventory when they have already been sold?

That should not be happening. Create a couple test products. Set the inventory at 10 each. Then mess with them. Put them in the basket. Delete the basket. Put them in the basket and leave them. Go back (with a different browser) after the basket timeout limit and delete expired baskets. I think you'll find it keeps track of the inventory.
