    Add Product as attribute?

Is there a way to make an attribute, a new product when the customer adds to basket?

It's a weird request, but here is why I need it. We offer personalized tags as an add on to our products as an attribute.

So Product ABC has attribute TAG

The problem is that we cannot inventory the attribute. The easiest solution would be if on the product screen, we could have a checkmark to "Add Tag", and it would add it as a new product in the basket, not an attribute. Is this possible with Miva?

How about using an upsell method? I think that is what you are really trying to do. Not sure myself, but I am sure others can clarify the details, but you can probably just not assign your TAG to a category so it won't show up in normal browsing. Now the TAG showing up on a search would be a problem.

I would LOVE to have a module that does that: Makes existing store products an attribute of another product.

      Developers, anyone?

If we ever become developers, this will be the first module we develop. We've been looking for a way to do this forever. Well, sort of this... we need to be able to select an attribute, and depending on what attribute (each attribute is a product), that product will be added to your cart. Is that what you're trying to do?

I will try to explain using an example of one of our products.
Take a look at one of the emergency kits we sell. As you can see, there is a bunch of "ingredients" in it. Each of those ingredients is an actual product sold elsewhere on our site. What I want to do is to be able to create a product called "kit", that would have a bunch of drop down or radio menus that would let a customer customize their emergency kits.
Ideally those products as attributes (PAs) would be separated into groups, as they are now, i.e.: Nourishment, Heat/Shelter, Medical, etc.
PAs do not need to have attributes of their own.

          Does this answer your question?

yes it does. When and if we start developing modules, this will be the module we start with.

To put my 2 cents in, I, too, would love a module that would allow products to be attributes!

Does anybody know of any specific reason why this may be extremely difficult or impossible? I plan on starting work on it, but I'd like to know if it is impossible. Thanks!

:D I don't know about you but not having a solution for this has cost us countless hours of development time that is essentially wasted because all we have done is build hacks and one-time solutions to a problem we'll run into again and again. It's time to build a real solution.

ADS is currently working on this module.
... but there is always room for more then one module on the market, especially if yours has features that ADS's doesn't.

                          Re: Add Product as attribute?

Actually, that is not exactly what I'm trying to do. Here's what I'm trying to do:

Let's say I have a client who sells shoes. They sell shoes from 10 different manufacturers and every manufacturer has a different system in place for how they handle colors. Some manufacturers have the same sku for multiple colors. Some have an entirely different sku for multiple colors. So, to make things easier, the client assigns their own internal product sku to every color of every product. The problem is that now there is no way (on the product screen) to know that there is multiple colors of the product you are looking at. I'd like to be able to assign these other colors to eachother as attributes so that when you select a different color, that color's sku is added to the cart instead of the one you are looking at. Does that make sense?

Have you looked at Viking Coders Attributes module or their Inventory Control module (which contains the attribute features)?

OK, here's what I've been trying to do. I wrote a custom module (only suitable for this particular store) that does exactly what I've been trying to do.

Depending on which option you select, that product code is added to your cart. It works nicely. :)
