Creating Shipment - the picking numbers generated

Hello,

After I create a shipment, picking numbers are generated. The first set in the group of numbers generated is the order number, the second set is the date. What is the third set of numbers?

xxxxxxx-20100310-xxxxxxx

I can't recall if they're random or just -001, -002, etc... so you can have multiple shipments per order.
