wombat - import product variants?

Hi Miva,

Been a little while since I heard much about this - please let me know if wombat now supports importing NEW attribute/inventory variants in an otherwise empty store.

In other words, I have a spreadsheet setup with all my variants, my store has no product data in it, and I want to import all of my products including attributes and variants and have them tied together at import.

Please advise, I hope this feature made it in. It is essential, since creating inventory variants by hand for 1000+ products is going to be "difficult".

I know the provisioning system is in there for this to happen, you'll have to look at the docs with RC1 this coming week to see if we've fully spilled the beans, or check the new tech docs Burch posted.

I kinda anticipated that answer - and that's just why I posed the question in this precise way. For a moment, please imagine I'm a store owner, not a coder that knows how to use provisioning.

If the only import capability is via provisioning, then it is inaccessible to most users. Store owners use the "import data from flat file" feature, this is really where the capability needs to be. Assuming we follow your default product code variant naming scheme, a field for "parent product code" would cover this quite nicely.

Please connect with the dev guys on this - even as a fairly technical guy, I don't look forward to creating an XML provisioning file from a client's spreadsheet.

I certainly understand that, however it's not going to make it into the Wombat release. We've been on a feature freeze for a while and need to get it out the door.

Great opportunity for a third party module in the meantime.

Hmm, that doesn't seem to match up with that you said two months ago today:

Yes we're building an import tool too. I personally helped configure a friends jewelry store that has only 122 master products but with attributes has just shy of 3,000 products.

It was a big task and we will continue to build all the tools we can to make it as manageable as possible.

Is this import tool vaporware?

Let me be clear, we're going to do what I said Two Months ago as you pointed out, but not everything can make it into the initial release.

At this time we have lots of people who anxiously need a stable release of what we've done so far and we have a pressing PA-DSS deadline to contend with, so we've stopped adding features to the coming release.
