Add weight to non-product line at OINF checkout

I would really like to see an update to your core API or whatever you call it to allow you to add weight to non-product line items. 3rd party checkout modules like the ones that are built to collect customer comments etc do allow the feature of a non-product charge like
Saturday Delivery $15
or
Special Gift Wrapping $20
and so on.

What we really need to allow is a way for the coders and the store owners to add a weight value to any of the non-product charges like
Special Packaging Upgrade $20 (behind the scenes it additionally adds say 7 lbs. to the total order shipping weight)
This would allow for more accuracy for store owners using weight based and real time shipping.

How hard could it be to add that tweak to your next stream ?

Actually that would be a major change to the API. All 3rd party modules that add anything to that database would have to address that new field in the basketcharges and ordercharges databases.

Well whatever the case I view this as a serious fly in the ointment limiting the checkout process.
Anything involved with basket items, fees, fluff, feathers or imagination should be able to carry a weight value if desired.
I feel the concept can be or is universally useful and should be considered for change.

The workaround would be to add Special Packaging Upgrade $20 to the basket as a product. The API does allow you to directly alter price and weight of items in the basket.

Yes I know; we have been using that clunky clunky workaround on our 4.20 store since way back.
The product shows up as an upsell item since nobody is likely to search around the store for it.

On some sites, I have added related products to product pages with a checkbox (like an attribute) instead of a button. If checked, it gets added to the basket too when the product is added.

Don't know if that helps, just food for thought.

If you are going to do that, why not just make the special packaging an attribute. Since attributes can have weight as part of their configuration, wouldn't that suffice...
