Re: Wombat Beta 4 is out - PLEASE READ Part 1

I have a 'fresh' copy of my store from 12-18 on a dev site. The copy had all the live stable updates as of 12-18-2009. I changed the update settings to beta and let the beta updates roll so I could play with this bad puppy.

    BUT... oh no! Error!

Miva Merchant expected module 'prodimpt' to be on version '5.5101'. The version found was '5.5102'.

I think you'll need to modify the version checker so that the ongoing live updates.. can be updated to wombat when it goes live.

If you ran the updates to the beta back on 12-18 yeah you caught the old ones with that bug. If it's a dev store, wipe it and reinstall. You'll be able to upgrade no problem.

If it can't be wiped, support can get you up.

That's just it. I only attempted the updates to beta yesterday for the first time. It was a fresh albeit three week old copy of the store.

Thanks Rick, And as far as the site modules working with Wombat, is this something that is up to the individual Module companies to upgrade? For instance, we use a couple of modules a lot; Coupon Redemption by Weiland and Ultimate Product Reviews and Ratings by Sebenza. These modules will not necessarily work with Wombat until and/or if the creators of the modules update them. Correct?

Re: Wombat Beta 4 is out - PLEASE READ Part 1

                    Matt,

Well the answer depends on if we've changed any API's. Both of the modules you mentioned should work without issue, we use Weiland's coupon module on our own store and are already running it on Wombat and have not had any issues. In addition we received copies of most modules from their respective developers and have been doing extensive testing to ensure compatibility. Finally wherever it was possible we made changes backward compatible, such as with the addition of Address Line 2.

I don't believe Sebenza's review module would have any issues either.

We've been working closely behind the scenes with the module developers to accomplish two things prior to final release:

                    1. Get as many of their modules confirmed to work on Wombat as is possible. I would say out of the gate 95% plus will work, many without needing any updates at all.

                    2. For those modules we know not to work, StoneEdge probably being the best example, we'll have a page as will they with a status about Wombat and be very vocal about modules that won't work immediately out of the gate.

In addition since we no longer change the version number of our software and just do ongoing streaming updates, most module developers will probably start charging an annual fee for updates or update specific fees (fee's only when they need to rewrite something to make it work). The module developers themselves will announce their policies around this and we'll help them by publicizing this information.

Finally, it is always best practice when running a major update to check with the module developers and see about compatibility and updates, then put your store in maintenance mode once you know you've got the right modules, run the updates and finally test all of your modules.
                    Thanks,

Coupon redemption module is fine and will not need to be updated. The features in merchant where APIs have changed that effect my modules are: inventory tracking at the attribute level, order management/processing, payment data display, new SKU field in the products database, and address line 2. Less than 10% of my modules are effected by the API changes. I am working on them and should have them ready at the time of RC1 (release candidate 1), i.e. soon.

Because there are 119+ Emporium Plus modules it would be a mammoth task to keep track of annual or monthly fees. It would also not be fair to have a service club fee that charged the same, no matter how many modules you had.

Hence, the very low upgrade price will be applied only on the module(s) needing updating. It is less than the typical update price encountered in the past when a store upgraded from 4.13 to 4.14 or 4.24 to 5.0 and had to buy ALL the modules again. This process will allow stores to only upgrade those that are rewritten for new features and in most cases skip updating those which were updated for features you will not use, e.g. attribute inventory. There is a brief summary at http://tinyurl.com/ydq5r44

I have a doc outlining which modules must be updated, which need updating only if you use a certain feature in wombat, and those that are optional. But I am waiting until we get closer to wombat release in case that list changes. Only 2 or 3 must be updated.
