In case anyone else is experiencing the same problem, 216justin figured out the issue:
After relocating that tag to the bottom of the add to cart form on the product page everything now appears to be working.
"I believe this update included some change to the main AttributeMachine JavaScript that now requires the <mvt:item name="attributemachine" param="body" /> tag to come after the quantity input of the add to cart form."
