MailChimp vs. native Miva adandoned cart emails

I'm planning to implement an abandoned cart email. I've already set up my MailChimp integration, so I now have two options to choose from for sending this email: direct from Miva or from my MailChimp account.

I'm considering doing this through Miva's new native functionality since I don't see that MailChimp provides me with anything here that Miva doesn't. Am I missing something? Has anyone else looked into the pros and cons of using one approach over the other?

At the end of the day they both send Abandoned Cart emails. The big differences is that with MailChimp you get a nicer admin interface to build and manage the email templates. With Miva your customizing HTML. MailChimp has really good visual editing tools for modifying the email templates.

I would also say with MailChimp if you choose to you can leverage their other automation such as sending product recommendations and follow up emails. If those are not important to you, than it may be simpler to use our built in Abandoned Cart integration.

One last note, MailChimp will give you built in analytics and reporting where with the built in version you need to tag the links with Google Analytics UTM parameters and use GA for conversion rate tracking and reporting. Because they are an email service provider you also get nice things like open rates and click rates.

FYI .. Neither method is currently working perfectly. I have tried both. There are bugs with the Mailchimp integration that is not showing images and prices correctly and the new Miva Abandoned Cart Email is sending emails that have empty carts at times, though some emails are fine..

Thanks for the update Jim. I'll hold off turning it on. I've decided to go with the native Miva functionality because for this one MailChimp requires that you use one of their templates instead of custom html. I have all my emails using the same custom html template, so I'll need to send through Miva.

I'm currently building my template for Miva. But I'll wait to enable it. Do you know if there is a bug report filed on the problem you've seen there and if it will be addressed in the next release?

            Hi Jim

I have added a bug for this issue, but until that fix is out I think you can prevent any emails that would be sent for completely empty baskets by setting the abandoned basket subtotal range to $0.01. instead of the default 0.00.

You can find the setting by going to Order Fulfillment Settings > Template Based Emails > Edit Abandoned Basket Email > Send When Basket: options.

Hope this helps and thanks for letting us know of the issue.

I've just enabled abandoned cart emails (with Eric's suggested fix which seems to work fine) and run my first scheduled task. It picked up about 15 baskets and sent out the emails.

For my store, overall, I have baskets set to expire in seven days at which point they are deleted with a scheduled task. I have set up my abandoned cart message to send after 1440 minutes of inactivity and to keep the baskets alive for 2880 minutes. Now that it has run, I can see in the Review Baskets screen that the last updated time on all of these has been set forward by two days. But this is still less time than it would take to expire the basket originally.

I have a question about what happens next. Once these baskets pass another 1440 minutes after the 2880 minute keep alive period (which would be four days since they were abandoned if the customer doesn't return), will the email get triggered to send again since we're still within the seven day window for keeping baskets alive in the overall store setting? Do I need to take down the keep baskets alive period in the store to keep these from triggering another email send, or does a basket somehow get marked as having received an email and get expired without resending another?

What would be the best way to test this without affecting customers? Old man Weiland sometimes added a test option to his modules, may be a good idea Dream feature to consider.

                  Hello All,

Is there a way that either Miva or Mail Chimp can generate a coupon code, insert it in the email, as well as insert the code in Miva's coupon module automatically. I'm trying to move away from an from two old emporium plus modules, one that we set up to send an email with a unique coupon code for abandoned cart that automatically created and pulled that code in from the old coupon module.

                  Thank You,

                  Kevin

Yes, Using the Generate Coupons module https://apps.miva.com/generate-coupons.html you can dynamically create a coupon code via template code and insert it into any page template or email.

You can't use this with MailChimp though since they send the emails. You would need use a single coupon code hard coded into the MailChimp template.

Will this work on the default "Shipment Shipped" email page?
