    State Sales Tax

So what's everyone using to collect and report on state-based sales tax now that many of us are going to have to start collecting for multiple states? Thus far we've only collected for our home state using the State-Based Sales tax feature of Miva. Is this robust enough or are you switching to ZIP-based from a 3rd party?

We use Avalara. I'm very happy with how it works for us. Depending on the state, ZIP code based may not be accurate. (It's not for New York state where counties do not overlap perfectly with ZIP codes.) Avalara can handle this correctly.

Still hoping this bill passes. https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-...bill/6824/text

The 10 million dollar threshold for small sellers would help protect us from this undue burden.

We have been using Avalara also.

As stated ZIP Code is not specific enough to determine sales taxes that can be levied on a particular sale, it literally needs to drill down to a specific street address being that multiple jurisdictions can be contained within one Zip Code but not pertain to every street address in that Zip Code.

Recently, I saw Miva offering webinar on Avalara recently. For you that are using Avalara, did Miva arrange any special pricing for us MIVA users or did you simply go direct to Avalara. thanks

I don't believe there's any special Avalara pricing. But there is an Avalara module that gets installed and configured in Miva to interface with Avalara to provide appropriate tax rates based on the customer's address. You need to contract with Avalara, and then they will provide a resource to install and configure the module for you. It's not just a simple module install like most other DIY modules. It does need to be professionally installed in your store.

We are looking into Taxify, Avalara wanted $2500 a month from us, Taxify is looking to be around $700 a month for us, but I Will need to find some who can write the AIP interface for Miva?

I was given this list of developers who might be interested, not sure. I did have a conversation with TaxJar that emediasales has begun development for TaxJar, so they might be interested in doing one for Taxify. Here is the list below.

This sales tax issue effects every commerce site. Avalara is truly overpriced yet the only current option for Miva users. It will create create economic hardships on Miva users. This coming year will be a costly one for all Miva users comply with sales tax for sure. I'm sure 3rd modules will be developed over the next year for other sales tax solutions that are significantly lower in cost. I believe Miva should have been well out ahead of this, and working aggressively with several tax solution providers to help develop these modules for cheaper tax services. In fairness the Wayfair vs south Dakota was only a few months ago.

We are an Avalara user and have been for over 5 years now. While I do agree they are on the pricey side the few times we've been randomly selected for transaction based audits they acted/interfaced on our behalf with the taxing authorities and does their best going "to bat" for their customer when things might go a little "sideways". The time that we would have had to of spent dealing with each open case was done on Avalara's "dime" and we were not charged any additional fees from Avalara for this. Only time we had to come up with any $'s to pay was when there was a discrepancy in the sales tax dollars collected (using item tax codes we chose vs what the taxing authority thought the tax code should be), and those $'s went directly to the taxing authority.

How many transactions if you don't mind me asking? I'm in talks with them, but I haven't heard a dollar amount yet. Not sure if it's $500 or $5000

I need a point of clarification here - is eMediaSales developing a module to use with TaxJar or are the developing their own tax reporting system?

I ask because I have a store owner (with multiple stores) that is having a less than stellar experience with Avalara. He is still in the configuration mode. I should note that the Miva module that connects to AvaTax works great.

Store owners need something that isn't going to drain their bank accounts...

This sounds like a separate solution of their (eMediaSales) own.

To follow up. Yes it does look like it's own system:

eMediaSales and Tax Data Systems, Inc., have teamed up to provide the most comprehensive and automated tax delivery system available. This "software and data as a service" provides you with a "setup once and forget about it" tax calculation system for your online store.
