Ready Themes - Popup Email Subscribe Box

Is the ability to have the popup email subscribe box going to be included? It looks like it would be a great option to include - with the ability to tie into what ever email service is being used.

Re: Ready Themes - Popup Email Subscribe Box

    Hi Leslie -

There is nothing on the admin side on ReadyThemes that will allow you to tie into a newsletter. However, we do plan to add some functionality for this in a future version.

As a Theme developer you can always create themes that have the newsletter box, and you would just tie it into whatever email service you like. You would do it as you do now, but editing the code in the Global Header Footer.

Leslie - have you looked at SumoMe? I've found that it is ideal to work across *any* type of site. It's free - but if you want to remove a little color block the fee is one-time 10 bucks. I use it on my site and am pretty impressed.

Wow, I can't believe it's been over 2 years since I asked this question and I don't see any follow on to it. Am I to assume that still nothing "native" is being offered? I think I'll pop over to SumoMe.

Whatever solution you use, keep Google's upcoming intrusive interstitual penalty on mobile in mind: https://webmasters.googleblog.com/20...ontent-on.html

Dan: Just scanned the article, and didn't see a clear argument for/against this, but if one used a standard modal pop over, wouldn't that not be a problem for google as the entire contents of the page is rendered, just partially VISUALLY obscured by the pop over?

Leslie: this is pretty easy to do to with whatever pop over modal is available and ajaxing the call to the subscription service. Plugins like this: http://malsup.com/jquery/form/ make the ajax action very easy to implement.

As with all things Google, it could be interpreted any number of ways and lacks clarity, but in my mind an interstitial is an interstitial no matter how it is implemented, modal or otherwise. The following statement in that article seems to support that assumption:

While the underlying content is present on the page and available to be indexed by Google, content may be visually obscured by an interstitial. This can frustrate users because they are unable to easily access the content that they were expecting when they tapped on the search result.
We have also noticed a few email marketing solutions prepping for this by suppressing all popup style newsletter signup features on mobile altogether, even though they could probably get away with a popup/modal that doesn't take up so much real estate according to the guidelines. Either way, with so many possible methods of integration/impementation, I wanted to throw it on the table here as it is something to consider.

Thanks Dan. Yes, unclear because in the past, SE don't really care about 'presentation'. Arguably, they want to avoid sites using 'hidden' content, but 1) not sure they can detect a modal popup that 'obscures' (cause that's only one way to present it) and two, properly done, its easily dismissed. I guess one work around would be to have the modal display INLINE, but with added emphasis say, on the first view.

I'm circling back to this because it looks like the SumoMe didn't work as expected. The store owner is using Vertical Response and they insist that it's up to the store owner to come up with some sort of popup. I'm thinking to myself, geee MailChimp has it. One Google search finds this "If you use VerticalResponse for email marketing, we have free opt-in forms they can display in a popup window." Vertical Response just offers the form, but not the popup...so now I'm going to dig for more popup solutions to insert the form into since Vertical Response seems to think it's something that comes with every site...
