    Selling license keys via MmPass

    Hi All.

I have prospective client that wants to sell a software product. They
want to offer a downloadable, free 15-day trial version and then sell
the key or a CD-Rom based version.

I was thinking of using MmPass to manage the key distribution. However,
I am not sure this is the right way to go. They have a java-based applet
that is supposed to generate a unique key to unlock the software. They
don't want to have customers download a second version.

I am meeting with them in the morning.

Does MmPass have a key gen component? Or is it best used to only
    distribute a fixed key?

What do folks who sell software use?

    Regards,

    Peter Stoermer

    Selling license keys via MmPass

    Pete-

We have an MD5 license key fulfillment module that can be used for this
type of licensing. The module will generate a key that is tied to a specific
variable; for our products, we use the "virtual-host-name" (since all of our
products are web-based apps). This, plus a private key can be used to
    generate
a unique key using the MD5 one-way hash (ie: without knowing the private
    key,
one would find it quite difficult to make their own key).

To use this in a miva store, one just makes an attribute of a particular
    name
(configurable), and adds a private key for each product that uses it. It
    then
generates a second email to the customer automatically after purchase, which
    contains their key.

The software vendor would have to build the same algorithm into their
    product;
and it would also have to know to expire, etc. Also, this isn't recommended
    for
scripted products, since the private key needs to be embedded in the
    software
somewhere. If the product source is easily readable, the key is easily
    compromised.

Let me know if you're interested- I'll be glad to discuss the technical
    details privately with your client.

    Regards,
    James
