I learned early on that I needed to hit that Logout button at the top right of the open seat sessions screen to reduce confusion.

I agree with Leslie regarding a min two-seat allowance. As a small business owner performing multiple jobs, its rare that I can just sit at a desk. I utilize 2 computers in separate areas so that I can monitor orders, respond to chat requests, etc. To have to log in and out would be a major hassle, and $50/mo just to be able to stay logged in at both computers seems harsh.

You have my vote, StoneEdge Order Manager needs to be a dedicated user for sure.

Re: $50 per additional simultaneous Administrative User

Professionally speaking, I see more pros than cons with a seat license model for all parties. The biggest advantage for both is that MIVA has huge incentive to grow your store, and provide even better service, while attracting enterprise clients. That's a huge advantage to smaller MIVA merchants knowing that they never have to worry about outgrowing their platform, and that Big business does not have a platform edge over them.

A perfect example of their new incentive to grow online business is their recent update MV9 admin and built-in marketing features. There are no other ecommerce platform currently on the market that contains an advance marketing solution built into the platform. This is a huge deal for small and medium size online merchants that don't have all the resources to promote their products and services the way Bigger merchant with dedicated marketing staff.

One thing is to engineer a platform that supports growth, another thing is to engineer a platform that drives growth. From where I sit, I can see many growth driven enhancements not too far in the distant future -can't help to be excited.

From my understanding, as how things are today, once we implement MV9 our costs will double. I don't know of anyone or entity that would eagerly embrace a 100% expense increase on a promise that they are going to make it up down the road. The only immediate analogy that comes to mind to make my point, though probably not the best, is if one of MIVA's fundamental operating expense was suddenly increased by 100% based on a future promise that has yet to fully materialize. The truth is these forward growth solutions require funding, and no revenue adjustments to the platform solution has been made in quite some time. It is projected that the new health care mandate on businesses will significantly increase employers expenses by thousands of dollars for each employee in 2015. Are they expected to absorb that cost too. If the do, how are they expected to fund future projects.

Maybe another suggestion worth contemplating is increasing the price of the base service so it can include two seats, and another price for each additional seat (e.g.: $75 Base + $60 for each additional seat), since it seems inconceivable at least to me anyway that any online start-up business would not require two seats (e.g.: Partners; Husband and Wife, or Father and Son, Siblings, Friends, etc...), or some other type of combination that provides even more incentive for growth. It also seems to me that platform pricing model would become more palatable to prospective start-ups. After all, even Amazon started out small, and maybe MIVA's current or next new start-up customer may become another big player during the course of their relationship, seems plausible -what a testimonial that would make "MIVA has driven more online start-ups to success and retained than any other ecommerce solution in the market." I can't think of any company in any B2B industry that has ever been able to make a similar claim.

          My two cents...

Thanks for pointing that out - I was so focused on the line, I missed the exit.

Re: $50 per additional simultaneous Administrative User

Ok, well after slogging through this thread I have a better understanding of the changes and the reasoning behind them - so thanks. Just to add my 2 cents.

-I'm not sure how hard it would be to do but you might consider adding a "Do you want to allow this Admin account to be logged out by remote Admin?" (something like that) so that some accounts could not be logged off by 'regular' admins (basically allow a super admin account). Since I work on code sometimes I wouldn't want to be randomly booted in the middle of something because someone was checking an order.
-built in messaging (so you can contact someone to let them know you need to jump in) or an option to enable popup "User ABC has requested control. You will be automatically logged out in 30 seconds unless you respond" or something like that - gives you chance to save or to ask for another minute or two if you are in the middle of something critical.

-I had been wondering if you could create a 'limited user' that would just allow say viewing orders. In our small operation for example, our workflow is still somewhat clunky as we manually work around old systems while we grow. We have several people with the order screen open who may look to check shipping, in the warehouse to verify stock or pick orders and so on. Ideally I'd like those people to be able to maintain a live view of these orders and if there was a less expensive limited access model for those 'viewer only' users I could keep them all online. Or perhaps when you lock someone out they could still access a 'view order' or basic summary information.

Otherwise, after reading your explanation I support what you are doing. I understand your reasoning and you seem to be making a good faith effort to work out the lumps in the gravy.

Re: $50 per additional simultaneous Administrative User

I would like to chime in on this as well. I was very displeased when I first saw this as well on Miva 9. 1 license for the fee, just seems way too low. After all Miva does make it required for you to host with them as well to use their cart, so you are already locked in there. Even Adobe allows more than 1 license (they allow 2) for their software. Hopefully Miva will read all of this & make a change to provide 2 or 3 logins for the current fee. I cannot justify having to make my clients who use this software pay an additional fee for me to login periodically for them to make updates to the system while they are logged in.

Furthermore it causes issues since now I have to login when they are not logged in to work within their admin. Which means I have to login before or after business hours to not affect what they are doing. This is unfortunately a big miss on Miva's part. And I would have a tough time referring future clients to use Miva's cart if this user login issue is not changed in some way.

Just so you know, you are NOT required to host directly with Miva. There are still 3rd party hosts that have Miva based accounts and they are competitive especially when you need something like a VPS account compared to the Miva shared hosting.

@lancermedia, thank you for the info. That is good to know especially with some of the bandwidth overage issues we were having. I will look around to see what options we have. Thank you.

I don't work for them......but we have a client with them on a VPS account and they have always been very responsive and helpful:

Obviously on a 3rd party you are paying for the hosting AND the Miva license.....but in our case we need server level shell access to run scripts for this client and the only option at Miva was a dedicated box at $500/month. We are getting a VPS for around $180/mo with 2 Miva licenses.

Just another note so you know, if you are using another host, you DO need to pay for additional seats too. I have clients at other hosts that have to pay for the additional seats.

Correct...that's controlled by Miva and the licensing server.

Ultimately seats are a price increase, Miva needs to increase pricing for a solid long term business model. (as Rick stated, no one likes a price increase, but they have to go up somewhere)

Now here's where this gets interesting in my mind. If Miva fills in holes for things like Synchro and Stone Edge, they allow admin users to chat/communicate with each other to gain admin access etc., they don't sell as many seats. I don't know the numbers, but this could result in a failed price increase model.

Rick will tell you I freaked when I heard of the final proposed seat model, not because prices were going up, but for the fact that it put a heavy burden on the developer/integrator community and has perception issues with end users/new signups. I would have preferred to see an increase on all package prices across the board, with an allotted number of seats depending on the level. If someone needs additional seats outside of those allotted with their particular package, then they can purchase more. (hybrid price increase/seat model) In the end, it's still the same price increase, but with less initial side effects as the current model.

It will be interesting to see the final developer/integrator seat solution as I am not sure it will fully ease the burden on that front.

Miva should offer packages, $50 - 2 additional seats, $100 - 5 seats etc... I think this is at least a more fair solution. I understand you need to make money, but this is a huge impact on businesses when we're paying for something that previously existed. You should consider the businesses that have been with miva all these years, and now we have to deal w/ this booting users off issue, and paying additional on top? come on, give us a break. put yourselves in our shoes miva.

We've contemplated our pricing extensively and we feel 50 per user per month is fair and a good value.
